WARREN COUNTY 2011 ARTS GRANT PROGRAM
Attention arts groups seeking funding in support of 2011 art projects which benefit residents of Warren County. On Tuesday, September 7 and Friday, September 10, 2010, 6pm, a mandatory grant application workshop will be held at Shippen Manor, 8 Belvidere Avenue, Oxford, NJ. This workshop is designed to help complete the application and to answer any questions concerning the application process.
Grant applications and guidelines will be available at the workshop.
Part of the meeting will deal with ADA compliance and all prospective applicants must attend one workshop. All arts projects and programs supported by Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission grant funds must be presented in ADA compliant locations.
Additionally, there will be a review of the FY 2010 Final Report. Questions and concerns about completing this report will be addressed.
Please note: Attendance at only one meeting is required. Failure to attend one of these meetings will void any grant application received from your organization.

FREE ECO DEL SUR AT SHIPPEN MANOR SEPTEMBER 5 AT 5PM
Eco Del Sur will be bringing famous musical sounds of South America to the Shippen Manor Lawn in a free concert on Sunday, September 5 at 5 PM. Eco Del Sur’s seven member band provides music that includes a wide range of styles and rhythms seldom heard elsewhere. Pre-Columbian and Spanish musical heritages combine with rhythms and styles of the Pacific and Atlantic Coasts as well as Caribbean and African influences for a very unique concert.
Eco Del Sur band members play an impressive array of instruments including: zamponas, quenas, quenachos, antaras, zencas, rondador, ocarinas, moxenos, flute, soprano saxophone, clarinet, charango, mandolin, guitar, Venezuelan cuatro, Columbian tiple, bass, congas, bombo, tambora, bongos, Peruvian cajon, maracas, guiro, claves, rain sticks, guaza, chakchas, among others.
Their highly developed musical talents provide for a rewarding performance of an unusual, distinctive, and exceptional nature. Eco Del Sur, which means ‘echoes of the south’, was founded in 2000 to preserve the heritage and culture of different Latin American regions and released their first album in 2001. They have performed throughout the Eastern United States with a large repertoire of famous Latin American songs that are now part of the world’s popular culture. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, alcohol free coolers, picnic baskets, and significant others to enjoy this free concert on Sunday, September 5, starting at 5 PM.

The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is pleased to announce a one person show of John Anderson’s original color panoramic photos at the Warren County Administration Building on Rt. 519 in Belvidere through mid-October, 2010.
A nationally know sculpture, Mr. Anderson was educated in art disciplines at the Art Center, Los Angeles and the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. As an educator he has held positions at the Pratt Institute, Cooper Union, School of Visual Arts, as well as at the University of Connecticut and the University of New Mexico.
John. Anderson received grants from both the New Jersey Council of the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. Collections of his work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum, as well as, numerous others. He had been featured in the New York Times, Art in America, and The New Sun.
For almost fifty years John Anderson’s works have been presented in one man shows at the Allen Stone Gallery, in New York City, and has been in the Whitney Museum of American Art Annual Sculpture Exhibit for four consecutive years. Other exhibits have included: Bundy Art Gallery, Waitsfield, VT; International Film Festival, Providence, RI; Maeght Foundation, France; Zabriski Gallery, NY; and, Newark Museum to name a few.
The Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Hall Gallery, on Route 519 south in Belvidere, is open to the public during regular business hours during weekdays and is an ADA accessible location. Revolutionary Era Medical Display at Shippen Manor
A discussion of Revolutionary-era medicine will be offered on Sunday, July 11, from 1-4 pm at Shippen Manor Museum.
Reenactor and medical historian Marjy Wienkop, of Ewing NJ will be on hand with a display of typical 18th century surgical instruments. In addition, Ms. Wienkop has assembled a large collection of herbs and extracts that were used as common remedies during the period. She is a member the recreated 1st New Jersey Regiment of the Continental Line.
The program is dedicated to Shippen Manor’s builder and original owner, Dr. William Shippen II, a prominent Philadelphia resident and delegate to the Continental Congress, as well as his son, Dr. William Shippen, III, who served as Director of Hospitals for Washington’s Army
In addition to the medical program, guided tours of the house will be available including interpretations of 18th century cooking techniques by historian Sally Shutler.

Warren County Students Chosen by Critics at 2010 Teen Arts Festival

The Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission is pleased to congratulate all students who took part in the Warren County Teen Arts Festival hosted by Warren County Community College. There were almost 400 student attendees during the two day Arts Festival held at the Warren County Community College on March 18 and 19. Professional art critics chose the art work of Warren County students to represent Warren County schools at the 40th Anniversary New Jersey State Teen Arts Festival, May 26 and 27 at Monmouth University. This year’s Warren County Teen Arts Festival saw an increase in the quality of student achievements throughout the various arts disciplines. The students’ parents and their teachers are to be commended for their roll in encouraging these emerging artists.
Belvidere High School students whose art works were chosen include: Mary Angus, Amy Carlson and Katie Moore, while Matthew Varvar was elected for dance. Works by Blair Academy visual art students, Cecily Marangos and Elin Ryd were also chosen.
Harmony Township School had four students’ works chosen for visual arts. They were: Ammon Hoffman, Angela Rodaligo, Tanner Schanzlin, and Samatha Woods.
North Warren Regional High School visual artists selected were: Mike Fowley, Mimi Kurtandze, Connor O’Brien, and Jillian Slockbower. The North Warren String Ensemble under the direction of Ms. Barbara Smith was also recommended. The ensemble consists of: Rebecca Ault, Dan Bier, Madison Bronstein, Andrew Bullock, Monica Daly, Carley Foerster, Kyle Ivins, Carmella Jimeniz, Sierra Johansen, Zach Lankowski, Dominique Lester, Brianna McConnell, Caileigh McConnell, Joe Moore, Brian Mulligan, Emily Pascoe, Julianna Schicho, and Charlotte Yiu.
Warren Technical High School students recommended in drama were: Alanna Slaw Kiewe and Kat Errickson; dance: Destinie Long, vocal solo, Jamie Metzgar, and visual artists were: Carey Davidson and Houston Herman.
Included in these honors were students’ works by; Katie Moore, Cecily Marangos, Elin Ryd, and Jillian Slockbower, for the year-long visual arts state-wide touring show sponsored by the New Jersey State Teen Arts.
The Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission partnering with Warren County Community College produced this year’s 2010 Warren County Teen Arts Festival which took place at Warren County Community College. Support from the Warren County Freeholders make this art experience a reality for the students of Warren County. Revolutionary War program at Shippen Manor Museum
The lives and times of New Jersey soldiers in the War of Independence will be featured at Shippen Manor Museum, the restored 18th Century stone mansion located in Oxford, NJ, on Sunday, June 6, from 1:00 to 4 pm.
Members of Helm’s Company, 2nd New Jersey Continental Line will discuss and demonstrate drill, tactics, weaponry as well as period food preparation. The group, composed of regional reenactors, recreates and commemorates a local unit in Washington’s army. Musket-firing presentations will be offered throughout the afternoon. Tours of Shippen Manor will also be available from 1-4 pm. The programs are suitable for all ages.
Shippen Manor Museum is located a quarter mile west of the Route 31/Wall Street intersection in the center of Oxford. The Museum and it programs are sponsored by the Warren County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission. There is no admission fee.

2010 Senior Citizen Art Show

The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is pleased to announce the winners and participating artists in the 2010 Senior Citizen Art Show at the Wayne Dumont, Jr. Administration Building. The works will be shown through May, Senior Citizen Month, with the show concluding June 29, 2010. This show is co-sponsored by the Warren County Division of Aging and Disability Services and the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission.
The 2010 Senior Show ribbons awarded in the Professional division for Oil Painting were: First Place, Duane Alpaugh; Second Place went to Inez Kline and, Third Place, Pat Olds. The Watercolor category winners were: First Place, Gene Clifford; with a tie for Second Place going to Patricia Lapp and, Joyce Motyka. In Acrylic Painting, First Place went to Jack Stephens while Jeanette Newcomb took Second Place. The Pastel category; First Place Ribbon went to Caroline Goldsmith, Second Place was awarded to Deborah Mores, and Third Place Ribbon went to Kathie Conden Enz. The Photography category was won by Endel Uiga with First Place, and Carol Southerland placed Second. In the Mixed Media category, First Place was won by Jacqueline Korosec, and Second Place was awarded to Mary B. Robinson. Ruth Grabner took the Blue Ribbon in the Drawing category.
The Amateur division winners were: Acrylic painting First Place award went to Shirley Spangler. Watercolor winners included: Ron Schwartz in First Place, Susan Goran and, Howard E. Kron tied for Second Place, and Shirely Stiehl and Gladys Szell tied for Third Place, with Honorable Mentions awarded to Maureen Heritage, and Nancy Kern. In the Photography category, First Place was awarded to Elizabeth Turcic, Second Place ribbons were awarded to Eric Mozenbecker and Linda Van Hoorebeke while Third Place was shared by Brigitte Cubbage and Barbara Polhemus. The Crafts category winner was Ray Van Hoorebeke taking the Blue Ribbon.

Warren County's Blue Ribbon winning art works will be entered in the 44rd New Jersey State Senior Citizens Annual Juried Art Contest and Exhibition. The State exhibition will be hosted by Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs. The location this year is: Meadow Lakes, 300 Meadow Lakes, East Windsor, NJ. The show will be open to the public Monday through Saturday form 10am to 4pm beginning Monday, September 27 until Thursday, October 28. The closing reception and awards ceremony will be held Friday October 29, 2010, 10:30 AM to 2 pm.
The 2009 Warren County Senior Citizen Art Show will be on display until June 29. The fully accessible Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Building is located at 165 Country Road, 519 South, Belvidere, New Jersey. The art works may be viewed from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. during regular business days.

All Warren County senior artists, 60 years of age or over, are welcome to participate by requesting rules and an application from the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission, 8 Belvidere Avenue, Oxford, NJ, 07863. Your completed application form and art should be delivered to the Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Building, between 10 am and 12 noon on Friday, April 16th. Artists may enter one work as either professional or non-professional. The art categories are: acrylic, craft, computer imagery, drawing, mixed-media, oil, pastel, photograph, print, sculpture, and watercolor.

Art Teachers & Student Art Show Announced

The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is pleased to announce the winners of the Sixth Annual Warren County Art Teachers & Students Art Show. The works are on display at the Hall Gallery of the Warren County Administration Building on Rt. 519 in Belvidere until April 8th.
The Sixth Annual Art Teachers’ show was organized and coordinated by Chris Coyle, art teacher at Belvidere High School.
Winning art teachers include: Maria Doll, 1st Place of $300, Rita Baragona, 2nd Place Prize of $200, Jennifer Schilling won the 3rd Place Prize of $100, and Julie Wane and Melissa Erne both received $50.00 for Honorable Mentions.
Participating students who placed with Honorable Mention awards of $50 each were: Mary Agnus of Belvidere High School, Annabel Gonzalez of Blair Academy, Caitlin Cramer from Hackettstown High School, Elizabeth Bello from Phillipsburg High School, and Jewel Sonne from Warren County Technical School.
Other teachers participating in the Sixth Annual Art Teachers’ Show were: Christopher Coyle, Susan Morley and Amanda Noll
The following students also participated in Sixth Annual Art Teachers’ Show: Bo Been Chung, You Jin Lee, and Alexandra Reed from Blair Academy; Skylar Jones and Xavier Menrano from Hackettstown High School; Amanda Boszczuk and Ashley Esquilin from Phillipsburg High School; and from Warren Technical School, Steven Mooney.
Nationally known sculptor, William Skrips of Blairstown was the judge for Warren County's Sixth Annual Art Teachers' Art Show. Mr. Skrips, educated at the School of Visual Arts, is influenced by American folk arts, the “Hairy Who”, and new German expressionism. His sculpture includes carving, welding, and assemblage of ‘found objects’.
The Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Hall Gallery, on Route 519 in Belvidere, is open to the public during regular business hours during weekdays and is an accessible location. $31,200 for the Arts Awarded by the
Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission
The Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission is pleased to announce Fiscal Year 2010 grant awards totaling $31,200 to seventeen County organizations which provide arts programming throughout Warren County.
Art organizations that received support for their 2010 public arts programming are: Centenary College Literature Colloquium, Hackettstown Community Band, HomeGrown Radio, NJ Civic Youth Ballet, Warren County Community College Visiting Author Series, Warren County Community Singers, and Water Gap Singers.
The public arts programs of the following PTA’s and PTO’s in Warren County received funding: Alpha, Harmony, Lopatcong, Pohatcong, Washington Borough, and Washington Township.
In addition, four community groups were included for their arts related activities: Friends of the Warren County Library, Pahaquarry Association for History and the Arts, Inc., Pahaquarry Foundation, Inc., and the Washington Business Improvement District.
The Cultural and Heritage Commission supported by the Warren County Freeholders funded these seventeen organizations through a grant received from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
